What are The Early Signs Of Depression In Men
Also see how to beat depression in 1 week here.
More than 6 million men suffer from a depressive illness every year (that’s 7% of the male population in the United States). However, in my professional experience of counseling men, the percentage of men with some form of depression, especially minor depression, is actually much higher.
Not only is depression in men hard to see, but it typically looks a lot different than it does in women. Additionally, because of the cultural expectations for men to be strong, not have problems, or to talk about how they feel, the signs of depression in men are often hidden.
As a result, men often talk about physical symptoms, such as feeling tired. Men would avoid talking about feelings, such as feeling sad, worthless or having excessive guilt.
Some of the most common symptoms of depression in men include:
- Alcohol or drug abuse
- Sleep difficulties
- Anger and aggression
- Loss of interest in work or hobbies
- Irritability and moodiness
- Excessive work or risky behavior
- Crying a lot
- Difficulty remembering things
- Physical aches and pains with no physical cause
- Feeling low-spirited for much of the time, every day
- Being unusually irritable or impatient
- Getting no pleasure out of life or what you usually enjoy
- Losing interest in sex life
- Finding it hard to concentrate or make decisions
Masculinity plays an important role in dealing with problems such as depression. Men often don’t feel able to reach out for assistance. Because both the symptoms of depression and the act of seeking help goes against a stereotypical view of how blokes should or shouldn’t behave.
Here’s the really GOOD NEWS – Research shows that more than 80% of people with depression get better with appropriate treatment. Forget about the expensive counseling and antidepressant medication, new modern treatment using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT is now the best way to beat depression fast and effective.
